Lots of the women I know love to set themselves big goals. This is going to be the year that you finally start that business, have a child, go to six figures, take the trip of a lifetime, get fit … all these dreams and opportunities are so delicious and exciting!
But I want to give you one very important reminder before you’re off to the races: if your goals aren’t in line with your heart’s desire, then chances are that things are just going to feel off. Today I want to share a simple process for how to set heart-centred goals.
What is your heart’s desire?
It’s funny how foreign this concept has become to so many of us. Your heart’s desire is simply that: those things that you truly want, deep down in your heart. But we’ve been socialised to ignore that little voice that tells us what we really want. It feels selfish to even think about getting your heart’s desire, maybe even a little dangerous!
But this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it’s only when you make listening to your heart a priority that you can really tap into your deepest purpose. Because despite what you might think (or have been taught to think), your heart isn’t there to tempt you or trick you — it’s a direct line to what Source (or God, Allah, The Universe…) wants for you.
In light of that… here’s how to create heart-centred goals
How are your goals looking now? Are they things that you really, deeply desire, or are you just doing them because someone else told you to, or because everybody else is doing them, or because you don’t even know what you want, but you have to do something, so it might as well be this?
I’d really encourage you to find some time this week to look over your goals from a heart perspective, when you’re really tuned in to your heart’s desire. If you find yourself hesitating at the thought of that, let me tell you this: looking at your goals through this type of lens can be scary!
You may end up finding out that the things you thought were very important to you aren’t really as important as you thought, and that actually, you’ve got totally different things that you’re meant to be doing. But after you get through it, and you know that you’re putting your energy towards those things that you’re truly meant to be doing, those things that will make you fundamentally happy, it can absolutely change your life.
So try this:
Sometime in the next week, I want you to find some time where you can sit down and get very aware of your heart’s desires. Even if you haven’t listened to your heart for years, believe me, it’s still there, waiting to talk to you. So find some quiet, uninterrupted time, and start to get present in your body. Then, in a journal, freewrite on the following:
“Desire is…”
“Desire is not…”
“I have desire because…”
“I don’t have the desires I want because…”
After you’ve done that, take a break and do something really loving for yourself. Maybe go for a walk, take a lovely bath with loads of essential oils in, or have a soothing cup of tea.
Once you’ve done that, I want you to come back and write down 10 things that you deeply desire to do in 2016. There’s no right or wrong answers, just let your heart speak.
And after you’re done with that, I want you to compare that to the goals that you were planning to pursue.
How do they match up? They may be pretty close already, in which case, great! Or you may find that actually, you were getting ready to spend a lot of energy accomplishing things you didn’t even want in the first place.
Finally, now you know how to create heart-centred goals, I want you to take at least one step towards making one of your dreams happen. It’s so important to do this, because this is how you show your heart that you really are listening to it — and that makes it much easier to hear going forward.
