Earlier this year, our family made the decision to move internationally, back to Australia. We are stepping away from the known, the familiar rhythms of life, and into a space where almost nothing is certain.
It is certain that business will continue here in the UK as normal. I will be back four times a year. There’s something certain in that. But beyond that…?
We don’t know what school the kids will go to.
We don’t know where we will live.
We don’t even know what “home” will feel like.
And for months now, we’ve been living in that uncertain space.
It’s funny, as humans, we’re not wired for uncertainty. In fact, the research is pretty clear, most of us would rather experience a known pain than the unpredictable anxiety of “what if?”. A UCL experiment showed that a 50% chance of receiving a shock triggered more stress than the certainty of actually being shocked.
Our brains crave certainty like oxygen. It gives us the illusion of control, the sense that we’re safe.
But here’s what I’ve come to realise, true wisdom develops in our capacity to be with uncertainty.
Because when you zoom out, when you really take a step back, what in life is ever truly certain? Everything can change in an instant. Jobs come and go. Health can shift. People we love, leave. The world itself is in flux.
And yet... we often live as if life should be predictable. Safe. Guaranteed.
What this season has taught me and what we’ve lived, as a family, is that certainty isn’t something we find outside ourselves.
It’s something we build within.
I’m so proud of how my kids have practised this lesson these last few months.
Through every unknown, we’ve practiced grounding ourselves in the small, sacred certainties that truly matter:
- We can put our feet on the earth.
- We can take a breath.
- We can love and hug.
- We can show up for each other, again and again.
And in doing so, we’ve grown stronger. More connected. More resilient.
We’ve flexed that “uncertainty muscle” and realised that we are okay. More than okay, actually.
We’re alive. We’re learning. We’re growing.
If you’re in a season of uncertainty right now, I see you. It’s not easy. But it is an invitation. To find your anchors, to breathe through the chaos, and to trust that you’re more capable than you know.
Certainty may not be guaranteed. But your presence, your love, your breath, those are gifts you can return to, moment by moment.
And they might just be enough. More than enough in fact. Perhaps all you need.
